Katata has the history which protected Rennyo, and is a religious town to Rennyo.
“Rennyo (蓮如) (1415-1499) was the 8th Monshu, or head-priest, of the Jōdo Shinshū sect of Buddhism, and descendant of founder Shinran”. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennyo) Enryaku-ji temple considered that Rennyo and his temple Hongan-ji (in Kyoto) the enemies of the Buddha, and Enryaku-ji temple oppressed them. Hongan-ji temple was destroyed and he led the life as a fugitive. He stayed at Honpuku-ji temple in Honkatata and waited for the time of revival in 1467. Enryaku-ji temple attacked Katata with the large force in 1468 (it is called Katata Ozeme). He gave up making Katata into headquarters. It is because Katata was close to Enryaku-ji temple. In April, 1471, he went to Echizen Yosizaki which was a still more distant place from Kyoto. This is Senpuku-ji temple in Katata is a temple of Jodo-Shinshu Otani sect. There is near Lake Biwa and the Dekejima lighthouse, and the channel and the shipyard attracted from Lake Biwa draw near right in front of the temple.
