Sempuku-ji temple in Imakatata is also closely connected with Rennyo.
Rennyo (1415-1499) was the 8th head-priest of the Jōdo Shinshū sect of Buddhism.
Enryaku-ji temple considered that Rennyo and his temple Hongan-ji ( in Kyoto) the enemies of the Buddha, and Enryaku-ji temple oppressed them. Hongan-ji temple was destroyed and he led the life as a fugitive. He stayed at Honpuku-ji temple in Honkatata and waited for the time of revival in 1467.Enryaku-ji temple attacked Katata with the large force in 1468 (it is called Katata Ozeme). He gave up making Katata into headquarters. It is because Katata was close to Enryaku-ji temple. In April, 1471, he went to Echizen Yosizaki which was a still more distant place from Kyoto.
